Tourism and hospitality partners in British Columbia, including the Tourism Industry Association of BC (TIABC), go2hr, and Destination BC, have partnered to conduct a survey about the status of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) efforts of tourism and hospitality businesses around the province.
BC’s Tourism and Hospitality industry partners want to hear from you! Take the anonymous DEIA survey (available from March 27, 2023 – April 28, 2023) to help inform DEIA needs, areas of focus, and our collective path forward. This survey provides an opportunity for meaningful DEIA engagement and open feedback, to gain a better understanding of DEIA efforts that will help lead us to a better future, together.
Tourism is one of the most diverse industries in the world, and supporting DEIA efforts and initiatives will take all of us working together—our employees, suppliers, partners, tourism communities, and the tourism industry as a whole. This DEIA survey is one initiative that supports the BC tourism industry’s continued learning journey as we collectively reflect on how we might better authentically represent communities in BC, understand how others encounter the world, and ensure tourism experiences are safe, accessible, and inclusive for everyone.
This survey should only be completed by one person per business/association/organisation, by an employee with the title of, or similar to: Owner, Vice President, General Manager, HR Manager, CEO, COO, or DEIA Specialist.
Share this opportunity with your network(s) and help the survey team reach over 19,000 tourism and hospitality businesses, and various industry partners, across the province. BC has a large and diverse tourism ecosystem that offers unique and valuable perspectives. All tourism businesses and industry partners are strongly encouraged to take the survey and be part of the BC tourism and hospitality industry’s important DEIA journey.
To support survey respondents in understanding terminology used throughout the survey and what is meant by ‘DEIA’, the following definitions apply:
Diversity: Different races, ethnicities, cultures, genders, identities, sexual orientations, religions, lived experiences, and abilities that make us individually and collectively unique.
Equity: Working toward fair outcomes for people or equity-deserving groups (such as women, Indigenous peoples, persons of colour, persons with disabilities, and/or LGBTQIA2S+ peoples) by treating them in ways that address their unique advantages or barriers and providing support and resources to create equal opportunities for all.
Inclusion: Providing active, intentional, thoughtful, inclusive, and equal access to opportunities and resources for all people. All people, including those with diverse abilities, should be able to participate fully and equally in their communities.
Accessibility: The concept of full and equal participation in our communities, with the physical, information, attitudinal and systemic barriers removed so all people can access services and products and participate fully in day-to-day activities and opportunities.
