Be prepared for emergencies with the help of our recently updated Emergency Messaging Guidance document.
The document outlines official emergency information resources for British Columbia and includes suggested messaging and actions tourism businesses can use to navigate questions, mitigate visitor concerns, and proactively manage perceptions during emergencies.
Emergency Preparedness Week is coming up May 5-11, 2024, during which we will be sharing more resources to help prepare for all kinds of emergencies.

BC’s Visitor Centres Receive Funding for Community-based Experience Enhancement
|
Destination BC, through the Visitor Experience Enhancement Grant, is providing 20 community Visitor Centres with funding to enhance visitor experiences both within the Visitor Centre and throughout the community.
The projects include a diverse range of initiatives including improved wayfinding and interpretive signage, guided and self-guided tours, and other educational programs.

Congratulations to the R2R “Spark” Program Winners
|
Twelve finalists who made winning pitches for the Rainforest to Rockies “Spark” Program were each awarded a $3,000 seed grant and mentorship to help them get started with their new tourism ideas.
The “Spark” program’s goal was to find, advance, and support new tourism ideas that enhance the experience of the road-trip traveller along the Rainforest to Rockies corridors in BC.

BC Tourism Climate Resiliency Initiative
|
The BC Tourism Climate Resiliency Initiative (BCTCRI) is a series of projects, funded by BC Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport (TACS), that focus on building a resilient tourism sector that is prepared to adapt to climate change.
|
Project Two: Micro-Grant to Support Sustainability and Climate Adaptation Plan Implementation
|
The BCTCRI micro-grant program provides eligible BC tourism businesses and non-profits with up to $15,000 in funding to implement existing sustainability and climate adaption plans or obtain sustainability certification.
Join us for a virtual information session for Project Two of the BCTCRI on May 7, 2024 to learn more about the application process, eligibility criteria and more.
Applications open May 13, 2024 and will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

Project Four: Community Destination Stewardship Initiative
|
Project Four is designed to establish a provincial network of community and destination management organizations across BC with the goal of enhancing the management of climate resiliency and sustainability within community destinations and the broader tourism industry.
The program will offer learning opportunities through workshops and peer-to-peer engagement to promote collaborative growth.
The first workshop on May 22, 2024 will provide a preview of upcoming workshops and content offerings, highlighting the pivotal role that communities in BC play as leaders in climate resiliency.

BC works with communities to boost wildfire prevention, preparedness

On April 20-24, the Province, First Nations, local governments, municipal fire departments and FireSmart BC came together to host a five-day FireSmart Wildfire Resiliency and Training Summit.
This year's Summit focused on the theme of 'Recover, Rebuild, Prepare', reflecting on the work done by communities after last season’s wildfires.

The Province is providing approximately $2.7 million to communities in B.C. for emergency-preparedness initiatives, such as new supplies for local emergency operations centres and conducting training and exercises to support staff and enhance capacity.

In line with 2022 results, the survey found that the majority of BC residents continue to value the impact that tourism has on their communities.

For residents, the most positive impacts of tourism are experienced in the Social-Cultural aspects of their lives, including the range of amenities, the development of local businesses, and the diversity of people supported by tourism.

75% of residents take pride in making visitors feel welcome.

There are a range of perceptions of the tourism industry’s commitment to sustainability with 54% of residents agreeing the industry uses more locally produced goods and services than other industries and close to half (45%) agreeing that tourism contributes to the protection of nature.
