Supporting BC's Visitor Services Network
|
Over the last few weeks, Destination BC’s Visitor Services team has held one-on-one discussions with visitor centres across the province. The work is part of the team’s responsibility managing BC’s Visitor Centre Network Program, which consists of 134 Visitor Centres across the six tourism regions. The calls provide an opportunity for each visitor centre to share an overview of visitation to date, as well as notable circumstances, key learnings, changes to visitor services during the shoulder season, and upcoming community events.

Destination BC Hosts Travel Trade and Media from China
|
Destination BC recently hosted a familiarization tour for a group of travel trade and travel media from China (October 9-15). The trip involved sightseeing in Vancouver, followed by a journey aboard the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff, and activities in Richmond. Hosted in partnership with Destination Canada China, Air Canada, Rocky Mountaineer, and Alberta partner Banff & Lake Louise Tourism, the tour focused on the Rainforest to Rockies Iconic route with an emphasis on seasonal growth.

Destination BC remains active in the China market through social media, offline events, strategic FAMs and co-op marketing, and partnerships.

Project 1: Sustainability Roadmaps for Tourism Businesses
|
This program provides free, one-on-one, tailored support to tourism businesses looking to incorporate environmental sustainability or climate adaptation measures into their operations, strategy, and storytelling.
The Fall 2024 intake is currently open, accepting applications on a first-come, first-served basis until all spots are filled.

Project 3: Sustainability & Climate Adaptation Data Framework
|
This project is focused on establishing a framework to provide strategic direction for aligning industry policies, practices, and metrics. The data may be used by partners within the tourism industry, and beyond, to develop tools to help businesses respond to climate hazards, and encourage use of common sustainability policies and practices.
Framework implementation has begun, with the intention of moving from data collection to data sharing by March 2025.

Project 4: Community Destination Stewardship Initiative
|
This session will explore the intersection of climate resilience and Indigenous knowledge, looking into the invaluable wisdom and practices that Indigenous communities have developed to adapt and respond to environmental challenges.

The Great Wilderness Launches in Germany
|
Members of Destination BC's Marketing, Destination Management, and In-Market Management teams, together with Indigenous Tourism BC and Northern BC Tourism Association, were on the ground in Germany at the end of September to support launch activities for The Great Wilderness and connect with local travel trade and media.
The Great Wilderness is Destination BC's second Iconic place brand. It encompasses the northernmost area of BC, from the Coast Mountains in the west to the Alberta border in the east, to the Yukon border in the north. The launch featured a unique activation where Destination BC transformed a car wash into an immersive experience of The Great Wilderness through imagery, lighting, and sound.

New Canadians Welcomed with Canoo App
|
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has partnered with attractions across BC and Canada to extend a warm welcome to new residents and citizens. People in their first year of citizenship and new Canadian permanent residents in their first five years of getting their permanent residency can download the Canoo app to access deals that make it easier to explore their new home. BC attractions featured in the pass include The Chinatown Storytelling Centre in Vancouver, wine tours in Penticton and Kelowna, the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, provincial and national parks, and VIA Rail’s journey through Prince Rupert, Prince George, Vancouver, and Kamloops.

Created by Accessible Employers, Tools to Make it Count is a practical toolkit for employers who want to measure the rate of disability in their workplaces. This knowledge can provide a jumping-off point to develop, strengthen, and implement a disability inclusion measurement initiative. Resources include stats and data to demonstrate the importance of disability inclusion, easy-to-follow steps to develop and implement a disability measurement initiative, and more.

|
Congratulations to Tourism Kelowna for earning a Silver Dolphin award in the Tourism Films Destinations - Cities category at this year’s Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards! The winning video, “Explore More of Kelowna in All Seasons”, showcases visitors experiencing the city and exploring the culture of the Okanagan/syilx people.

2024 Michelin Guide Vancouver Selections Announced
|
On October 3, the Michelin Guide unveiled its selections honouring Vancouver chefs and restaurant teams. The announcement called attention to several Vancouver restaurants, including one new Michelin-starred restaurant (Sushi Masuda), one new Bib Gourmand restaurant (Gary's), and two new Recommended restaurants (Bravo! and Zab Bite).
